GRAVEYARD MAINTENANCE TEAM

We meet normally on the last Saturday of the month in the graveyard, Coley Road, opposite the church gates. Some work in the graveyard is done by relatives, friends and descendants of the deceased - and we have a laugh and a chat as we work. We’re keen to keep the grass cut and the paths clear while encouraging the wildlife.
The team would be delighted if you could join them. Just come along bringing gardening tools if you have them. Everyone is welcome.

CHRISTIAN MISSION SOCIETY

Coley Parish has supported the Christian Mission Society with prayers and financial donations over many years.  This continues today.  We support a Mission Partner, Andrew, who is currently working with Asylum Seekers in Glasgow. We pray for him regularly and share news about him. We have many parishioners who have a CMS savings box, which is collected at the end of November. From time to time our Mission partner comes to Halifax to talk about his work and his experiences. Contact Chris  01422 204040

COLEY CHOIR AND MUSICIANS

The choir sings a wide range of traditional hymns and modern worship songs. The choir is available to sing at baptisms, weddings and funerals on request. As part of St John's outreach, the choir and musicians have taken their music out into the parish to entertain people.  We always welcome new, enthusiastic singers and musicians of any age to join us in making music and singing praises to the Lord. Do come along and join us at our rehearsals which are held every Thursday evening from 6.45pm to 8pm in the Church.

PRAYER CORNER

At the end of every 10.30 am service, our prayer team offers prayer for those who need it: whether it is about something God has said or has done in their life; either a personal matter or if they want prayer for someone else.  The Bible teaches us that God hears and answers all our prayers. God knows our needs and wants the best for us. We will join you in asking God for your requests whether it is for healing, for friendship, for peace, for answers, for comfort, for help. God listens. God inspires. God comforts. God gives. God heals. God loves us all

PASTORAL CARE

The Pastoral Care Team supports the Vicar in his ministry with the congregation. The team also enhances and co-ordinates the care that already takes place in our church between all our parishioners. Some people may need a home visit, a hospital visit or just a chat on the phone. As part of this caring we have an active telephone prayer chain to pray for anyone who has a need

MAGAZINE TEAM

A bi-monthly Parish Magazine is produced by an editorial team. The team meet before distribution to finalise the copy. The magazine is a way to pass  information on and get Coley's voice heard. Every contribution, no matter how small, is valued.

MISSION TEAM

The aim of the Mission Team is to take the church out of its four walls. By reaching out to the community, we aim to spread the gospel and the love of Christ to those who may have a need.

CRECHE

A crèche is available for small children and babies, supervised by volunteers, at the 10.30 am service, held in the choir vestry. Parents and babies are welcome to join the Young Church in the vestry during the service.  Parents can listen to the service through the loudspeaker system. Everyone usually returns to the main body of the church for Communion.

READERS AND INTERCESSORS

Bible reading and intercessions (prayer) are an integral part of every church service at St John's. These roles are taken by a wide number of church members who regularly participate in church ministry in this way.

OTHER PROJECTS WE'RE INVOLVED WITH

CHILDREN'S SOCIETY

As a church we support the Children's Society. Their network of projects helps over 50 000 disadvantaged children and their families every year. Each year we hold a coffee and cake morning, in the church hall, where people bring their collecting boxes to be opened and the contents counted. The sale of coffee and cakes brings in further revenue for the society.  Everyone is encouraged to come to the coffee morning as a social event.

TRADECRAFT CHURCH

We are a registered Tradecraft Church which means that where possible we use fairly traded goods in activities connected to the Church. We encourage church members to purchase fair trade goods and support Tradecraft who work to help poor farmers in the developing world earn a living through trade. After the 10.30 am Sunday service or items can be ordered from the Tradecraft catalogue. The team would welcome new ideas for encouraging people to buy fairly traded goods.

CHURCHES TOGETHER

Coley Parish is pleased to be working ecumenically with fellow Christians in the local community and one way is through Churches Together. The group includes St Matthew's Lightcliffe, Christ Church, Hipperholme as well as St John the Baptist at Coley. Also we link with St Matthews Northowram. Activities include joint services, a prayer breakfast, a Good Friday walk of witness and frugal lunch, a women's day of prayer, a Lunch Club, working with Christians in Calderdale Schools (CICS). We present the community with a list of all the Church services available in the area at both Christmas and Easter. At the beginning of Advent we meet with the community to light the Christmas tree at Hipperholme crossroads and include carols and prayers for this Christian Festival and gives a Christian witness in the village of Hipperholme.
